It’s tough being the least popular member of a very popular trio—just ask Krist Novoselic. While Beyoncé has rocketed to an entirely different level of stardom post-Destiny’s Child and Kelly Rowland has knocked out the occasional chart-topper, Michelle Williams… well, what exactly has she been up to? Turns out you haven’t heard her on the radio since she’s been branching out to the stage; Williams starred in Half & Half on UPN and made waves on Broadway via The Color Purple. Not too shabby. But what girlfriend does better than anything is sing, hence Unexpected, her long overdue solo pop effort. Her press releases are touting the disc as the urban answer to Kylie Minogue’s surreal Euro-pop, but Williams’ MySpace page classifies the material as “Christian/R&B/pop.” We’re guessing that’s just MW keeping it real; the pulsing synths and samples here aren’t anything you’ll be hearing in a mega-church anytime soon. “Hello Heartbreak” is her (clean) answer to “SexyBack.”
